Niklas Bley initiated his career by enrolling in the BA Philosophy & Economics in Bayreuth. In his bachelor’s thesis, he focussed on sustainable consumption and the barriers and enablers to implementing a sufficiency economy. He further enlarged his interest in sustainability research during an internship at the Helmholtz-Zentrum für Umweltforschung-UFZ in the department of economics. Niklas Bley subsequently studied the MSc Sustainable Development in the focal area economics in Basel. In his master’s thesis, he analysed the relationship between socioeconomic inequality and the Social Costs of Carbon using the DICE model, under supervision of Prof. Frank C. Krysiak. He is currently a PhD candidate at the chair of environmental economics at the University of Basel.
Given the increasing influence that the climate crisis exerts on our lives, the study of causes, effects, and solutions of it becomes indispensable in academia. The MSD provides an interdisciplinary toolbox of methods in the social sciences, natural sciences, and economics to analyze topics related to the climate crisis. The extensive range of courses - especially in economics - allows students to gain deeper insight into specific areas without loss of interdisciplinarity.
