Sharks were there before the dinosaurs, but are still a mystery to science today. Swiss shark researcher Kerstin Glaus (MSD alumna) is investigating the many secrets in the South Seas archipelago of Fiji.
In 2016 Kerstin Glaus started fishing on Fiji's biggest river. But only to examine and measure the baby bull sharks and then immediately let them back into the water. On her fishing trips she encountered a completely unknown phenomenon. 80 percent of the baby sharks caught in the Rewa River have bright red eyes.
Kerstin Glaus has not yet been able to decipher the secret of the red eyes. The young have no parasites or skin lesions, they are strong and seem absolutely healthy. Maybe, so their hypothesis, it could be an irritation of the eyes.
